Located in the village of Backbarrow, just a couple of miles from the shores of Lake Windermere and 8 miles from the historic market town of Ulverston, Woodside Cottage is perfect for couples and families seeking a comfortable base from which to explore Cumbria’s stunning Lake District. This charming, end of terrace property, built in the 1800s as a mill worker’s cottage, has been literally taken back to its bare bones and transformed by the owners into a truly splendid home, which now provides stunning up-to-date accommodation. The property is spread over three floors and has been thoughtfully designed and beautifully presented. On the ground floor there is a spacious living/dining room with a lovely feature fireplace with wood burner. Two steps lead up to the well-equipped kitchen. On the first floor is a comfortable double bedroom, contemporary shower room and a stunning family bathroom, which has an elegant roll-top bath and separate shower cubicle. There is also a seating area on the landing which is the ideal place to sit and read a book in peace. The second floor has two further bedrooms, one of which looks out towards the Haverthwaite-Lakeside railway line. If you are lucky enough, you may see a steam train go chugging past (trains run between 10am and 5pm April to October). Outside, there is an enclosed garden with decked patio, and a driveway for 2 cars.

The nearest main town is Ulverston, 8 miles, known for being the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the world’s only Laurel and Hardy museum. Ulverston is a very traditional market town with historic buildings and cobbled streets, and it also marks the start of the 70-mile Cumbrian Way. Here you will find a good selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Ideal for families, there is lots to see and do within easy reach. Less than half a mile from the cottage is the Lakeland Motor Museum, and Haverthwaite railway station is just 1 mile away. You can take a beautifully restored steam locomotive on a scenic journey through the Leven Valley to Lakeside station. Once at Lakeside, you can explore the Lakes Aquarium or connect with Windermere cruises and take a steamer to Bowness or Ambleside.

Children will enjoy the world famous Beatrix Potter attraction at Bowness, 10 miles. For something more adventurous, why not visit Grizedale Forest with its many walks, mountain bike trails, segways, sculpture trail and GoApe treetop adventure? Foodies will enjoy a visit to the nearby village of Cartmel, 7 miles. Famous for its sticky toffee pudding, this characterful village is also the home of a Michelin starred restaurant as well as attracting many visitors to its racecourse. Other places to visit within easy driving distance include Furness Abbey, 15 miles, Holker Hall, 6 miles, Sizergh Castle, 15 miles, and the Edwardian coastal town of Grange-over-Sands, 9 miles. Shop 2 miles, pub/restaurant 300 yards.
