Accessed via a footpath up some steps directly off Ilfracombe’s oldest street, The Bolthole is a lovely Grade II listed terraced property, formerly part of a hotel, which offers characteristic features such as gorgeous stained-glass windows and a stylish spiral staircase which is the only access to all floors in this quirky house.
There are two bedrooms, one twin on the ground floor and one double on the second floor, the latter benefiting from an en-suite bathroom and access to the roof terrace where you can sit out for a morning coffee or quiet evening drink while you enjoy the sea view. On the first floor you will find the living room which has a gas fireplace with an unusually large and ornate surround and mantel piece plus seating on both sides. There is also a separate shower room on this floor. Meanwhile, on the ground floor the kitchen/dining room can be found with the usual modern appliances including a coffee machine. If you don’t fancy staying in to cook then quite literally on your doorstep are several good quality and popular restaurants to try out, many of which are regularly visited by locals from all over North Devon for their tasty local and ethnic fayre.
The surrounding area has many attractions waiting to be discovered such as Cairn Woodland Nature Reserve, Hillsborough and Rapperee Cove, The Torrs, Watermouth Bay and the South West Coast Path, the lovely Fuchsia Valley, Watermouth Castle and Theme Park. Don’t forget the town’s very own lovely harbour and port which dates back to at least the 12th Century with quality ice cream, fish & chip and various craft shops plus Damien Hirst’s Verity statue which is a must see. Trips to Lundy Island, coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving are all available. Take a trip on the Ilfracombe Princess and see seals, porpoises and sea birds nesting on the cliffs. Try your hand at sea fishing on Blue Fin or take an exhilarating tour of the amazing coastline on the Ilfracombe Sea Safari or on the Hampshire Rose, a former RNLI Lifeboat.
Ilfracombe is also perfectly situated to the enjoy the countless other North Devon attractions such as the popular Tarka Trail which provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and scenery stretching from Barnstaple through to Bideford and beyond. Then there’s Exmoor National Park, just 11 miles away and Lynton & Lynmouth, 19 miles to the east with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway which opened in 1890 and is the highest and steepest totally water powered railway in the world! Beach 1 mile.

Nice unique / quirky property in a great location. Some lovely touches from the hosts with the addition of a secret minibar, and biscuits, but kitchen needs kitting out with a few more items to make dining in more of an option. Thankfully, the location has a wealth of options for dining out. A few recommendations are to provide plugs for sinks, a bathroom door that closes, a new letterbox, and some air fresheners (as we could still smell previous inhabitants dog). With a bit of TLC this would be a lovely place. Don’t get me wrong, we enjoyed the break but feel the house needs a bit of investment to justify the current rate
