Take the opportunity to enjoy the glorious surroundings of an apartment within this historic Adam-style mansion, Spylaw House, which was once the home of Sir James Gillespie, a snuff manufacturer and philanthropist. Built in 1773, this apartment suite is an oasis of calm, and with fresh flowers greeting you on arrival, is the ultimate destination for a romantic break. It lies just two minutes’ walk from the historic village of Colinton with its shops, pubs and restaurants. The spacious, comfortably furnished lounge has three beautifully proportioned windows, and several period features include the fireplace, a wrought-iron balcony and sash windows. The acclaimed novelist, Robert Louis Stevenson, spent a lot of his childhood in Colinton within the local church grounds in Spylaw Street, where his grandfather was a minister, and there is a statue of him in the grounds of the church. Private parking and a good bus service, around 35 minutes to Princes Street, allows stress-free and economic access to the city’s museums, galleries and shops. Follow the Water of Leith walkway into the city all the way to Leith or there is easy access to the city bypass allowing you to explore further afield.
