It is just a short walk to the edge of the West Cliff with some fantastic views across to the famous Whitby Abbey which towers over the town, and down to the mouth of the River Esk and the swing bridge. Whitby is busy all year round and there is always something happening, with the biannual Goth Weekend, Folk Festival, a Regatta and many musical events to name a few. There are traditional pubs serving home cooked food and offering live music, delicatessens and coffee shops as well as bistros, gastropubs and cuisine from around the world to enjoy. Take a stroll over to East Cliff and wander around the cobbled back streets and the many independent traders offering a range of goods from traditional to the bizarre. Climb the 199 steps to the abbey and enjoy the fantastic views out to sea and down to the town, or enjoy a boat trip out in search of minke whales and dolphins.
The North York Moors National Park is right on your doorstep and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Take a drive in search of waterfalls and ancient abbeys, choose one of the many walking or cycling routes available, or catch a ride on the North Yorkshire Railway as it steams its way through villages such as Goathland and Grosmont, across to the market town of Pickering. The seaside town of Scarborough is just south of Whitby where you can walk from the North Bay to South Bay. North Bay is where you will find the Open Air Theatre, which hosts international music events, beautiful Peasholm Park and a water park. South Bay is all about bright lights and arcades, candy floss and donkey rides.
The Cleveland Way snakes along cliff tops and drops down into hidden bays dotted all along the coast such as Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. Head a little further afield and visit the walled city of York with its minster, Jorvik Viking Centre and hundreds of shops, bars and restaurants that are well worth a visit. Beach 240 yards. Shop 700 yards, pub 100 yards, restaurant 175 yards.
