This terraced cottage with sea views is spacious and has two living rooms and a dining room, meaning plenty of space for everyone. The owner has taken great care to make the property a comfortable holiday home. The rear garden is enclosed with outdoor seating and catches the sun most of the day. Ridsdale House is situated in the historic ‘old town’ area of Scarborough, originally home to the fishing and seafaring community.
There are lots of interesting, narrow cobbled streets that lie between the South Bay and stretching up to the ruins of Scarborough Castle, which is only 500 yards from Ridsdale House. The castle is a former medieval Royal fortress with over 3,000 years of history and views from here overlook both bays; the quieter North Bay and the bustling South Bay, with the long Marine Drive that joins the two. Beneath the castle walls is St Mary’s Church and here you can visit the English novelist Anne Brontë’s grave.
A short walk from Ridsdale House is a choice of restaurants, pubs and shops and only 350 yards away is the redeveloped Market Hall, with traditional market stalls and a mezzanine area with interesting eateries. The Vaults underneath the Market Hall is a labyrinth of small shops with antiques, handmade gifts, second-hand books, collectables and much more.
The nearby South Bay beach is large and sandy, with traditional attractions such as donkey rides, amusements, ice cream and fish and chips. The quieter North Bay is a short walk from the house. Scarborough has something for all age groups and lots of visitors say they never have to leave the resort as there’s so much to see and do; from theatres, both indoor and outdoor and the famous cricket ground, home to county matches, to the Sea Life Centre, the Alpamare Water Park and the beautiful Peasholm Park with its boating lake, tree trails and summer naval warfare display.
Ridsdale House is the perfect base to visit the East Coast, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds. Just down the coast are the resorts of Filey, Flamborough Head and Bridlington and to the north of Scarborough is the bustling fishing town of Whitby. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs is just a short drive away. Beach 600 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 400 yards.
