Set in the middle of a busy working farm with livestock and surrounded by barns, calf pens, and other outbuildings, Bluebells (ref. UKC3010) and The Manor (ref. UKC3916) offer the ideal base for families or couples wishing to explore the area and for those who wish to enjoy the experience of outdoor farm life, with calving, lambing and shearing at certain times of the year - guests are welcome to watch by prior arrangement. It is advisable to bring wellington boots.
The Manor forms a large wing of the owners listed farmhouse, which is steeped in history and there are parts which date back to medieval times. Monks used to farm here, and it served as a satellite to St Swithins. There are some wonderful features, such as the high ceilings, thick stone walls, steep curved stairs, and the arches and high beamed vaulted ceiling in one of the bedrooms, which was formerly the upper level of the church priory, where the monks used to pray. The fields surrounding the properties were used by soldiers in the Battle of Agincourt prior to going to France, and in World War II, American soldiers amassed here prior to D-Day. The Manor has a huge living room with a wood burner, perfect for warming up after a day of walking or sightseeing!
Bluebells accepts dogs - (to be kept on a lead and closely supervised due to livestock) and there are direct walks to the local ancient woodland with bluebells and other seasonal flowers. There are five scenic walks, including the Monarch Way, aptly named as it is the route that Charles II took when escaping the Battle of Worcester in 1651! The Test Way is nearby, which is a very popular walking and cycling route, and another route leads to the local Saxon church. For really keen walkers, why not try the route that takes you into Winchester, about 12 miles away. The area is also renowned for its excellent fishing; the River Test area is especially good for both coarse and fly fishing.
Located in an area popular for sightseeing, the beautiful cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury are within easy reach, and the historic town of Romsey, 3 miles away, has a selection of shops, pubs and eateries. Visit the 18th-century country house of Broadlands, with its extensive gardens, which was the former home of Lord Palmerston and also Lord Louis Mountbatten. Broadlands is open to the public in July and August, and hosts a range of craft shows, concerts and events throughout the year. Nearby Stockbridge has tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, many serving local produce, as well as art galleries, craft and gift shops, a delicatessen and traditional butcher. The Houghton Fishing Club can also be found here and is the oldest fishing club in England. Mottisfont Abbey (National Trust) and Hillier Arboretum are also nearby.
Places to visit for family days out include Paultons Park, Peppa Pig World and the ever popular New Forest National Park with its roaming ponies, extensive heathland and picturesque villages. Within an hours drive are Stonehenge, Weyhill Hawk Conservancy, The Army Flying Museum, Thruxton Races, Wilton House, Highclere Castle, Beaulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum, and Marwell Zoo. The beaches at Mudeford, Christchurch and Bournemouth are an hour or so by car (depending on traffic). Beach 22½ miles. Shop 3 miles, pub 1 mile, restaurant 1½ miles.
