Discover this central Yarmouth bolt hole, less than 200 yards from the sea and the central square of the quaint, historic sailing town harbour. Hardtack Cottage will comfortably accommodate four guests and a small to medium sized dog, this cottage really is a great choice for a couple or small family. Built on the site of a former bakery, the cottage takes its name from the hardtack biscuit that the bakery would of likely once made, an inexpensive recipe it was made from flour, water, and sometimes salt and was generally used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, very commonly eaten by the sailors during their long sea voyages.
Today the sailing town of Yarmouth is located in the north west of the Isle of Wight, and acts as a gateway to the island with one of the main ferry services operating from its harbour. This historic town sits at the mouth of the River Yar and contains some of the oldest architecture on the island, including a 16th century castle which can be found at the side of the ferry dock. The history of the town is very evident as you walk round and a trip along the Grade II listed pier is highly recommended for views across The Solent, and is also known locally for being a great spot for fishing. At the foot of the pier you’ll find a licensed café which is open all year round serving a range of food and refreshments, be sure to try a locally sourced ‘Minghella’ ice cream. There are a number of good pubs and restaurants in the area if you are looking for somewhere to eat. Yarmouth offers a great mix of traditional cuisine from a range of country pubs and beachside cafés and tearooms, along with some very popular restaurants serving local produce and freshly caught fish.
Locally, you can explore the River Yar with its wonderful estuary and nature reserve, and the network of walking and cycling routes extending to Tennyson Down and all the way to the amazing rock formations of famous Needles and Alum Bay. The fantastic Colwell Bay is also nearby where you will find a bar, restaurant and a café to try the local seafood, experience some of the finest sunsets or enjoy a stroll along to neighbouring Totland Bay. There are spectacular views across The Solent to mainland England, with clear waters and gently sloping sand and shingle beaches.
Outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf. There are numerous attractions to discover for all ages, pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and Gardens, Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK, Isle of Wight Zoo, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park, Carisbrooke Castle or visit the other famous sailing town of Cowes. There is plenty to discover and keep you entertained. Beach 2½ miles. Shop and restaurant 50 yards, pub 65 yards.
