If you’re looking for a relaxing break in one of the most beautiful parts of The Lake District National Park, then look no further than Gardeners Cottage. This quaint detached cottage is just a short stroll from the centre of Near Sawrey village and is ideal for couples looking to unwind and use as a base to explore the stunning surroundings. Near Sawrey is located between Lake Windermere and Hawkshead and nestles on the shores of Esthwaite Water. It’s also home to Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s former home where the inspiration was drawn for many of her famous tales. Here you are also less than a 5-minute walk from an excellent village pub offering good food and local ales, with an open fire and a real country pub feel to it.
This detached cottage is situated in a small courtyard with greenery at the entrance adding a splash of colour to the stone façade. The ceiling has two Velux style windows which provide plenty of daylight to the interior. This comfortable cottage offers spacious open plan living with a double bed and plenty of seating and storage for your belongings. 3 steps lead down to the kitchen area, which features a breakfast bar and is well-equipped with everything you could need to prepare a hearty breakfast or an evening banquet. There is a shower room with large shower, making this property ideal for a couple’s getaway. The private parking space is directly outside the property and there is an outhouse housing a washing machine, shared with the holiday apartment next door.
The picturesque village has lovely scenery and walks available from your doorstep. Just 2 miles away you’ll find Hawkshead which offers a range of pubs, shops and plenty of independent cafés and coffee shops. Here you are just a short drive from the Windermere car ferry, which in just 10 minutes takes you across the Lake to Bowness-on-Windermere with an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants. Take the steamer across the lake to Ambleside in the north and Lakeside in the south which connects to The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway. Here you are close to Grizedale Forest with lots of woodland walks, cycle routes and a high rope adventure course, great fun for adults! For golfers, you can access Windermere Golf Course in a short drive as well as Esthwaite Trout Fishery which is just 1 mile away. Beach ¾ miles.
Gardeners Cottage can be booked together with Garth Court to accommodate up to 4 guests.

    The position of the cottage is the main motivator to book if you are looking for a great, private base for good walks. It should be noted, there is only a pub or two within close proximity, but Hawkshead offers all anyone would need and is a 2 mile walk away. Now, the cottage could use a little refresh. The bed is VERY creaky and we had a bulb out and no curtain across the entrance door/window (holes in the wall suggest there has been one before). For those who want to stay in, the TV is tiny and you need to 'wiggle' the wires to get a range of channels. We would wall mount to enable watching from your bed as well as the settee. No toiletries provided, but maybe a Covid thing? The main house was being worked on during our stay, with full on power tools at 8am and throughout the day - we should have been made aware before booking, but as early risers and out all day, it wasn't a total spoiler for us. Parking is provided, but is tight (prewarned), but there is the alternative at the main house. The local pub The Tower Bank Arms is a super place and has lots of outdoor space. Hawkshead (2 miles) is quite busy and has a cracking chip shop and the ferry (2 miles £1 on foot/£5 car) takes you to busier parts of the area. Overall, a lovely spot and we would go again.
