Garstons Barn is set in idyllic, tranquil and picturesque countryside at the end of a country lane in the rural village of Gatcombe. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and surrounded by scenic hills, downland and fields, you can enjoy a holiday in a truly tranquil setting teeming with wildlife and which is also centrally located for accessing the island and local shopping in nearby Newport and Carisbrooke. There are miles of footpaths, bridleways and cycle tracks on the doorstep making it perfect for an active holiday. On clear nights you will be amazed at the starry night skies as light pollution is negligible.
This very well presented, detached, three-bedroom barn conversion has three bathrooms and is equipped to a very good standard, sleeping up to four adults and two children. There is a spacious open plan living area with two comfy sofas, a dining area, a modern fitted kitchen and a separate utility room. The Barn is accessed through a gate into your own walled, sunny courtyard with a few steps down to the living room. There is ample outside parking on two sides of the walled courtyard.
Gatcombe village snuggles amongst picturesque scenery and buses run along the main road, about 1¼ miles from the property. The parish church of St Olaves, dedicated in 1292, is 1¼ miles away and regarded as one of the most beautiful on the island. Its stained glass is by William Morris of the Arts & Crafts Movement, and by the Romantics, Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Ford Maddox Brown and Edward Burne-Jones. There is a monument by Sir Thomas Brock to Captain Charles Grant Seely (killed in action in 1917) which was unveiled in 1922, and a carved wooden effigy around which various legends have developed. For a time, it served as a chapel to Gatcombe House, (a Grade I listed building and setting for ‘The Beast Must Die’ drama).
Newport, on the River Medina, is the county town of the Isle of Wight and is about 3 miles from Gatcombe; it has two elegant squares flanked by Georgian and Victorian architecture. A short walk from the centre down on the river is The Quay Arts Centre. The Isle of Wight Festival, a key event, takes place every June at Seaclose Park in Newport, which runs adjacent to the River Medina. Newport Minster is the church in the centre of Newport. Whether you like history, church buildings, concerts, exhibitions, services of worship or simply a place to be quiet, the minster has something to offer you. With fascinating historical links, it is also part of the Victoria’s Island Trail. Newport offers plenty of things to do and is a great place for shopping with chain stores, supermarkets and smaller independent shops. The Tuesday market and a highly rated farmers market on Fridays sell a good range of local produce. Newport also offers plenty of entertainment during the day and most evenings.
