Just outside the small hamlet of Talley, famed for its 12th-century abbey remains, sits Towy Cottage, one of two converted Welsh barns. Lovingly restored, this charming holiday retreat is ideal for a small family or a couple, who want to get away from it all and reconnect in this beautiful part of Carmarthenshire.

Situated on the owner’s working cow and sheep farm and lovingly furnished with comfort in mind, this terraced stone barn offers spacious accommodation with quality furnishings, a well-equipped kitchen, a cosy electric wood burner and a private patio complete with a hot tub. Sit back with a glass of wine and soak up the ambience of this wonderful location, perhaps while enjoying some al fresco dining or simply gazing up at the night sky. This is also a great location for wildlife watching, particularly for birds such as buzzards and red kites.

The surrounding areas are particularly popular with outdoor enthusiasts, being a natural playground for cyclists, ramblers and nature enthusiasts. The nearby Brechfa Forest and the Brecon Beacons National Park are the ideal place in which to escape the hum-drum of everyday life and spend a day exploring, discovering and enjoying all that this natural area has to offer.

Take a short drive to the picturesque Tywi Valley and discover the many sites dotted along the beautiful river, including dramatic 12-century castles Carreg Cennen and Dryslwyn, sitting high upon their embankments, or the Dinefwr Park National Nature Reserve with a picnic for a fabulous day out.

Also nearby are the gardens of Aberglasney Manor, inspiration to poets and artistic for centuries, the National Botanical Gardens of Wales, housing more than 8,000 plants across 560-acre countryside, and the stylish yet historic town of Llandeilo with its wide range of eclectic gift shops and highly acclaimed restaurants. Beach 26 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 5 miles.
Towy Cottage can be booked together with Teifi Cottage (UK11630) to accommodate up to 6 guests.

On arrival the cottage was cold and unlit and as we were expected and it was December I would have thought heating would have been on for a while before our arrival; we were shown where the heating control was but we couldn't work it out and there was no instructions left in the cottage for us. Likewise with the TV control, the wi-fi and the towel heater which seemed to work seperate from the main heating. Charlotte said she did have a book with all in but the last tenant took this with them. ( according to visitor book this may have been end of October so seems plenty of time to get a new one done) It would have been cosier if there was a lamp in the lounge but it was either the big light or nothing ; there was a free standing lamp under the stairs but with no bulb in it so we couldnt use that. Tea lights were available and three holders so we used the xmas tree lights and 3 tea lights to make more homely/cosy. The cottage did not seem very welcoming ( although Adam and his son were). As we were staying between xmas and the new year and would have expected the xmas tree and trimmings to still be up to create a nice atmosphere for New Years Eve. We found a xmas tree and put it up and took it down ourselves. We always go away at this time of year and this is the first place where there was no xmas decs left up for us. Charlotte says they like to take down by boxing day but we were disappointed Busting for loo when we arrived and rushed upstairs to find no loo paper. There was one left for us down in the kitchen but may be more useful to leave on side of bath so guest knows its there if they haven't had time to go into kitchen. We understand why it isn't on loo roll holder due to Covid and re-assurance it is a brand new one. We have stayed in many cottages and similar over the years and we are usually left more than just the one loo roll ( just saying) On looking up the bathroom light had lots of dead flies in the shade about 10/15 ( possibly this has happened between last guest in October and when we arrived end Dec) The shower plastic shower mat was also black underneath which I scrubbed myself using a brush and hand soap. Both chains broken on plugs. The bathroom itself aside from the mat and light fitting seemed immaculately clean. On putting our food away we thought we had been left a loaf of bread as a 'welcome' . I pressed the bread and it seemed really fresh. On taking it out of the cupboard I discovered it wasn't fresh but the whole loaf had just turned to a loaf of soft mould and the mould was also growing on the outside of the wrapping and the paper was damp and started to break in my hands. The BBD on the bread was 8th Nov and we arrived on 30th Dec. I put it back and told the owner about it . There was some used clingfilm in this cupboard too. I also told the owner about the biscuits that were left were out of date also (BBD Sept 2021)and although there was no date on the sachets of milk when we went to use one it was gone of and curdled. I said I would leave it all there for them to see ( so these stayed there for our whole 3 day stay and not cleaned away or any items replaced.) We have always had a lovely xmas welcome pack left when we have stayed away before at this time of the year and on most occasions our dog has had their own welcome pack too. I did read that we were left complementary eggs laid on the farm but on asking these were not left as hens were not laying very well at the moment. On reading the visitor book the reviews left were fantastic and guests were thanking them for the 'lovely welcome pack' which we didn't seem to have. It was almost as though it was forgotten that we were coming as there was no decorations up, no welcome pack/eggs, out of date items and bread that must have been in cupboard for about 8 weeks and no heating/lighting left on for us. The owner did get her mum to pop a bottle of Prosecco to us for NYE though and to apologise for the cupboard not being cleaned, the mouldy bread, the out of date biscuits and the gone off milk sachets. This was a lovely gesture and we drank it in the hot tub NYE. Had Charlotte come to clear the items away and replace items or to show us the heating/tv workings I would have pointed out the other things that just needed a little improvement such as the bag that the tea bags were in was left greasy and sticky and also the jar that the tealights were kept in ( you could feel the grease on the jar and see other peoples finger prints on there) as well as pointing out the bathroom light and mat. The kitchen crockery & cutlery was lovely but let down by a bread knife that had all the paint peeling off it. It just let down the overall feeling of the utensils as it really did look awful and very old. There was already a little damage to items that I wanted to let her know were already there; broken velux window frame on landing, a nasty dent in the bathroom wall, a nasty scrap on fridge door caused from possibly opening kitchen door when fridge door was open, a large ring mark on one of the nest of tables and part of the skirt on hot hub torn. Also there was a clock on the wall that didn't work and we kept looking at it for the time only to remember it wasn't working We would have preferred a blind on the kitchen window for more privacy , especially in the evening, as it looked out into the farm yard of a working farm. Steady outside lights , rather than sensor, would have been more beneficial as the back one didn't activate when our dog was going out to do business so we couldn't see what she was doing . On getting out of the car it was dark and underfoot was muddy and slippery due to the weather so it would have been advantageous having a sensor light that would come on when you got out of the car , rather than one around the corner by front door so guests can safely get from the car to cottage. As were were paying over £500 for a 3 night stay fresh flowers would have been nicer than artificial on table ( some holly even or pussy willow at xmas time) On the whole the cottage was a lovely renovation and apart from the parts pointed out above seemed immaculately clean. There were no immediate amenities but we didn't mind this as we went away to do nothing but eat, drink and relax Whilst we do recommend the cottage itself we would not stay again based on our own personal experience. However the other guest comments in visitor book seemed exceptional so think we just had an unlucky turn of events with a number of factors meaning we did not enjoy as much as we had hoped
