Balmore Cottage is tucked away in the north west of Skye on the relatively unknown Harlosh peninsula. The cottage enjoys an enviable location only a couple of hundred yards from the sea and panoramic views taking in the iconic Cuillin Ridge as well as Macleod’s Tables. Harlosh is both a peninsula and a crofting settlement on north west Skye. It’s just over five miles south from the village of Dunvegan, and close to lots of big, well-known sights like Dunvegan Castle, Coral Beach and Point Neist Lighthouse. A little further afield and to the south, you have the Cuillin mountains waiting to be explored with countless hiking routes leading the way. The Fairy Pools are an easy drive down the west coast of Skye from Balmore Cottage, and the Talisker Distillery is basically en route! Honestly, the list goes on.
Balmore Cottage is in an excellent spot to explore all of the big-hitters on the island. A week probably isn’t enough, considering you’ll want to spend some down-time at the cottage as well as exploring every corner of it. The cottage itself dates back to the 1800s, possibly the beginning of the 19th century. Its exact build date is unknown, but the owners can deduce earlier 19th century rather than later because during renovations the structure of the roof indicated an original thatch instead of slate roof, and thatch was more associated with the original blackhouse-style not the latter croft cottage of the late 19th century. Simply put though, it has a rich heritage and it’s stood on the peninsula for many, many years. The owners have done a tremendous job renovating the cottage and decorating it to a very high standard. There’s an excellent kitchen and shower room with underfloor heating in the extension to the original cottage. In the main, old part of the building there’s an excellent living/dining area with a wood burner, and two spacious bedrooms, one a double and the other a single.
It’s an excellent standard of accommodation and you’ll be pleased to have Balmore Cottage as your base for Skye explorations and relaxations.

    The cottage is on its own in an amazing location on the Harlosh peninsula, which is itself small enough to explore in a day. The accommodation is simple but comfortable, and well situated to visit many places on the west side of Skye. For wildlife enthusiasts the location is outstanding, next to a wild area of rough grass and reeds. Five minutes walk away you can oversee the bay, from which we had several glimpses of otters.
