Accommodation description

Located down a long drive in a quiet wooded valley, just outside the Exmoor village of Wheddon Cross, Quarme Coombe Cottages offer a real haven away from the world. The quiet and beautiful natural countryside is right on the doorstep of these detached cottages. Hedgehog Cottage has a cosy interior and there is a good sized garden at the rear of the cottage, as well as a sitting-out area at the front. Barn Owl Cottage has a well-appointed interior and there is a large garden with a sitting-out area as well as large lawn and small wooded area. Red Deer Cottage has a light, airy and open plan living area with three delightful bedrooms and a garden which is bordered by a stream.
The cottages are just a short drive away from Wheddon Cross, which has a well-stocked convenience store and pubs. Further afield, there is superb scenery and walking on the South West Coastal Path, or inland on the moors. The Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watermeet Gorge (National Trust), Valley of the Rocks and the funicular cliff railway, are within an hour’s drive. Looking towards Minehead, there is the promenade to enjoy an ice cream whilst walking along, as well as having a good array of shops and other amenities. A visit to the enchanting medieval Dunster Castle (National Trust), with its beautiful terraced gardens, deer park and mill will make for an interesting day out. Watchet, Porlock and Porlock Weir hold plenty of charm and interest to those who visit the area. There are beaches at Minehead, Dunster and Blue Anchor. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

It is a lovely property, it's remote but not too far to travel for places like dunster. The country side is beautiful around it.

Looked so promising on the website but sadly failed to reach our expectations. Builders were on site carrying out works to an outhouse with angle grinders and heavy hammers meaning the garden was out of bounds for the best part of three days. Conversion works were also going on to a separate barn building by the car parking area too. The first we were aware of the works to our cottage was when two men walked across the garden on Tuesday whilst we were still in bed. Neither took the time to knock on the door to explain what was being done. Perhaps maintenance could be planned when the cottage is vacant and not during the summer holidays? Lack of constant hot water meant that cold showers were the best that could be taken and caused problems when trying to wash up! We had power outages on Wednesday evening which may have been due to external reasons, but being so isolated it would have been helpful to have a stock of candles available or else bring a torch! The cottage is advertised as being pet friendly which was why we booked, but dogs are restricted to ground floor only and not allowed to be exercised in the garden. With the surrounding fields full of cattle this meant the only place to exercise the dog was either the single track lane or taking the dog out in the car. No dog specific bowls or washing facilities for them at all after a day out so bring your own! Separate laundry with a charge for both washing and drying for both cottages on site was frustrating, rather have a washing machine than a dishwasher! Whilst there is limited Wifi, mobile signal is non existent from the cottage and a limited signal can only be had at the top of the track. Could have been so good with a little more thought and a few welcoming touches, but sadly left disappointed and feeling short changed all round.
